#cyrillic_poland (ongoing since 2019; with Andrii Dostliev)

archive of images, generative video

Since 2019, we have been documenting vernacular Cyrillic inscriptions that appear in Polish urban spaces, most often in the form of tags, words, or short sentences written on walls and various surfaces. Despite their transitory nature, marked by the medium and rather modest aesthetic or artistic value, this street Cyrillic represents an interesting social phenomenon. On the one hand, these inscriptions are a manifestation of the co-presence of migrant communities from Ukraine, Belarus, etc.; on the other hand, they remain almost invisible, as slogans written in a different script are unreadable to most local residents who encounter them.
